BLUE
& GOLD BANQUET (Sat,
March 7, 2009)
Page 2
Trophies were
presented to the winners of the Pinewood Derby, including the cars that
won "Best of Show" awards that had not been previously
announced.
Then, without
warning, our banquet was "boarded" by ruthless pirates who
came to promote the Mohawk District's Cub Scout Day Camp in June.
They told some (really bad) pirate jokes (comedy must not be a big thing
with pirates?), passed out some information to parents, then forced our
Cubmaster to teach us a pirate song that everyone had to sing before
they'd leave. The whole thing was very traumatic for the adults,
but the Cub Scouts seemed to enjoy it.
Lots and lots of
patches and other awards are typically presented at Blue & Gold
Banquets; and that was certainly the case this year. It takes a
bit of time, but every boy deserves his due recognition.
This year's banquet
featured a cake auction during which cakes that had been baked and
decorated by the Cubs were auctioned off to the highest bidder.
The auction was a lot of fun and benefited the pack's treasury that, in
turn, benefited the scouts!
 |
| Every scout was up
front when it came time to recognize the Pinewood Derby
participants. |
 |
|
 |
| All the Pinewood
"drivers" received a patch and an official Pinewood
Derby Drivers License. |
 |
|
 |
| The winners of the race received
trophies, but the driver licenses seemed to be a more popular
item! |
|
At every Pack Meeting, scouts are
given an opportunity to earn a "Uniform Inspection"
patch. |
 |
|
 |
| Then, unexpectedly, our meeting
was interrupted by invading pirates who bore a striking resemblance
to Mohawk Day Camp directors Barbara Weber and Angel
Mattingly. |
|
The pirates forced Cubmaster Meek
into teaching the Pack a pirate song that was sung to the tune
of the Gilligan's Island TV show theme song. Then
everybody had to sing it. |
 |
|
 |
| The program concluded with the
cake auction. This entry was titled "Fort
Webelos" and featured a frontier fort made of pretzel
sticks and a trail made of graham cracker crumbs ... yummy! |
|
This cake featured an
Indian tepee, also make of pretzel sticks, a campfire, and some
Indians. Even though participation was optional, nearly
every Cub Scout brought a cake. |
 |
|
 |
| This chocolate cake
featured plastic cowboys (in Cub Scout yellow) and Indians (in
Cub Scout blue), was decorated with graham cracker crumbs to
look like the dusty old west, and bore the theme "Wild Wild
West." It was judged to best represent the theme of
our 2009 Blue & Gold Banquet. |
|
The ultimate
"chocolate obscenity" featured a chocolate cake with
embedded pieces of chocolate, chocolate frosting adorned with
chocolate figures and chocolate morsels. It was enough to
make our "choc-aholic" Cubmaster drool. |
