CAMP FRIEDLANDER 2008  (Friday~Sunday, April 25~27)

This was Pack 868's very first family camping trip and we wanted it to be special, so we borrowed the Boy Scout troop's bus and headed for Cub World at Camp Friedlander near Cincinnati, OH where we camped inside "The Castle" and shot water balloons at targets set up in the surrounding field.  We explored "the mine" and the Boy Scout camp, went fishing in the lake, took 2 hikes, and shot BB guns.  Under adult supervision, the Cubs got to cook pancakes, hamburgers, and grilled cheese sandwiches.  We baked pizza and chocolate chip cookies in a box oven.  And on Saturday night we had an evening campfire program with another pack that was camping in "The Fort" and made smores.

The weekend trip began with a 3-hour bus ride on Friday night.   "The Castle" was awesome.

The only thing it lacked was a moat filled with water and some nasty beasts!   On Saturday morning, the first order of business was feeding a bunch of hungry mouths.

As much as possible, we wanted the Cub Scouts to do the food preparation.  Hunter is shown here stirring the pancake mix.   Two charcoal "shepherd stove" grills and cast iron griddles borrowed from Troop 868 provided perfect cooking surfaces at Cub Scout height.
It takes longer to let the boys do the work, but scouts don't go camping to watch mom cook!  A few pancakes bit the dust, but overall the boys did quite well.

And, of course, there was friendly competition between whichever two boys were cooking at any given point in time.   And, eventually, everyone got fed and there were pancakes left over.

Oh ... did we mention that clean-up is also part of the job?  These Cub Scouts didn't seem to mind pitching in to help wash the dishes.   Den Chief Chris helps Preston clean some caked up pancake batter out of the mixing pot.  It's all about teaching the boys the right way to do the job.
