"The Castle" at Camp Friedlander (April 16~18, 2010)

Pack 868's annual spring camping trip to Camp Friedlander is always a popular outing.  The Cub World at Camp Friedlander features three theme areas --- a mid-evil "castle," a frontier "fort," and a gold rush "miner's camp."  The castle and the fort both feature sleeping rooms with bunk beds for 4~8 people.  Pack 868 has traditionally alternated between the fort and the castle.  Last year we stayed in the fort, so this year we were back in the castle.

During the day on Saturday, we took a hike through Cub World and the Boy Scout camp part of Camp Friedlander.  On Saturday afternoon we shot BB guns.  The Cub Scouts cooked pancakes for breakfast and made box oven pizzas for lunch.  The parents cooked dinner and Sunday morning breakfast.  We ended the day with a Saturday night campfire complete with skits by each den.  Afterward, we roasted marshmallows and made smores.

"The Castle" at Camp Friedlander's Cub World is made of concrete block and sleeps 72 people. On Saturday morning, the pack assembled in the center courtyard to raise the colors.

Two of the four corner rooms are large, open rooms that are ideal for dining and/or program areas.  We ate in one and used the other for general storage.

The second tier contains a full balcony from which Cubs can look down into the center courtyard or over the walls to the outside.  Two wide staircases provide access.

Webelos Leader Mike Troxell and Ass't Cubmaster Bob Meek enjoyed razzing each other all weekend.   The Cubs enjoyed climbing through the tunnels in the Miner's Camp campsite.
Climbing on the rocks that form the man-made dam that creates Lake Marge Schott. Boys enjoyed two totem poles that stood near Camp Friedlander's chapel near the center of camp.

At Camp Friedlander, the BB range has mattresses and scouts shoot from the prone position.   Webelos Cub Scout Ethan and Den Chief Tyler had a small competition going.
