"THE FORT" @ CAMP FRIEDLANDER (Apr 29~May 1, 2011)

Pack 868's spring camping trip is always a trip to Camp Friedlander in Cincinnati.  We alternate between camping in "The Fort" (odd numbered years) and "The Castle" (even numbered years).  This year we were in The Fort.

The Fort is a western-style frontier fort that has sleeping quarters for around 60 people in "bunk house" style rooms around a center courtyard.  Larger rooms appropriate for dining or program activities are located in the four corners.  We used one of them as our dining room, but the weather was nice and spent all of our program time outdoors.

We know that part of the fun of camping is being able to do things for themselves ... things they usually don't get to do at home.  So, as much as possible, we let the Cubs cook several meals.  This takes longer than simply having a couple of adults cook for the entire group, but the boys really enjoyed cooking their own pancakes.  We thing the time required was well-spent.  For many of the boys, it was the first time they had ever cooked anything.

Most of Saturday morning was spent shooting BB guns and playing on the obstacle course.

Scouts lined up for a bedtime snack of milk and cookies inside the Fort on Friday night. Smart Scout leaders always feed the boys plenty of sugar before sending them to bed!
Saturday morning breakfast consisted of pancakes.  The dining room looks kind of empty because every scout got to cook his own breakfast, then we wanted them to eat while the food was hot.  These guys were among the first in line, so they were the first ones to get fed.
Outside in the courtyard, scouts gathered around to watch and wait their turn to cook.  The younger guys learned by watching the older boys.   Trevor and Tristan cooked their pancakes under close adult supervision.  No one got burned.
Then it was time to go and shoot BB guns.  We had one of the ranges all to ourselves. At Camp Friedlander, Cub Scouts shoot in the prone position lying on foam pads or mattresses.

Cub Scout shooting sports are always conducted with close adult supervision to insure safety.   Tristan raised the gun straight up to load another BB.

After everyone had shot as much as they wanted, it was back to the Fort for knot-tying class.  Somehow Tate seems to have gotten himself tied to the flagpole!  He doesn't seem too upset about his condition and someone freed him the next morning!   Then it was time for lunch.  A Pack 868 camping favorite is box over pizza made by spreading pasta sauce on an english muffin, sprinkling on some grated cheese, then baking for about 10 minutes in a box oven.  Again, the boys made their own.
