GLASSWORKS TOUR  (Sat, Jan 10, 2009)

The Pack borrowed the Troop 868 bus and took a Saturday morning field trip to visit the Glassworks studio in downtown Louisville.  After a introductory video, the Cubs got to see scale models of a number of major construction projects that involved glass before getting to watch an artist/craftsman fashion glass hearts.  The visit ended by getting to watch a glassblower at work.  A few of the braver parents let their sons take closely escorted tours into the gift shop where many beautiful (but VERY expensive) works of glass art were on display.

Our tour began with a brief slide show.

This was followed by a tour of the "model gallery" where scale models of past projects were on display.

Our tour guide explained the importance of the models in helping the customer to visualize how the finished project would look.  The detail of the models was amazing.

Our next stop was to watch a glass artist at work making small, colored glass hearts for Valentine's Day.  From a gallery area, everyone had a clear view of the process without feeling the heat.  Even though it was January, the shop area were the artist was working had the air conditioning running!

The final stop on our tour was to watch a glass blower at work in his studio.  He was making small colored glass ornaments when we arrived, but stopped what he was doing to demonstrate glass blowing.

We were able to see everything clearly through the glass windows of an elevated observation area.

His studio included multiple furnaces where molten glass was heated.  Glass from pieces that broke was typically swept up and tossed back into the furnace --- the ultimate in instant recycling!   As we prepared to leave, Cubmaster Bob Meek asked the boys what part of the tour they most enjoyed?  Nearly everyone said it was the glass blowing.
