PINEWOOD DERBY  (Feb 14, 2009)
Page 3

Race Day finally arrived.  Parents, siblings, and grandparents all showed up to watch the races.  After a final weigh-in, the cars were placed on tables in the "pit area" and only the car's owners could touch it from that point forward.  Den Chief Chris Brown was our official starter and a team of three pack parents served as judges.  Another parent videotaped the races.  This turned out to be a good thing, because we had several "photo finishes" where the judges had to stop and view the recording in order to determine the order of finish on our 4-lane track.

Parents from Boy Scout Troop 868 came to run a concession stand so that all the pack parents could watch and enjoy the races.  We used a computer program to schedule the heats so that every Cub Scout got to race his car multiple times and ran an equal number of times in each of the 4 lanes (to eliminate any bias that might happen to be in the wooden track).

Pinewood cars parked in the pit area after weigh-in.

Cubmaster Bob Meek explained that heats and lane selection would be made by a computer program.   Cub Scouts Hunter and Matthew placed their cars on the track as Webelos Scout Chris waited.

For each heat, the "drivers" got preferred seating to watch the finish.  Here we have Caden, Matt, Hunter, and Chris.   Kenneth obviously won this heat over Tilyr (who was absent but whose car war raced by substitute driver Den Chief Dylan), Henry, and Zack.

Brandon doesn't seem as interested in this heat as follow drivers Calvin, Scott, and Zack.   Henry was the last driver to place his car on the track in this particular heat.

Four cars set and ready to roll as Den Chief Chris waits for the finish line judges to signal they're ready.   Donna Canchola was among the Troop 868 parents who volunteered to run the concession operations so Pack 868 parents could watch the races.
