PINEWOOD DERBY (February 20, 2010)
Page 1

Pinewood Derby is always one of the highlights of the Cub Scouting program year.  Each boy receives a car kit that includes a block of pine wood, 4 wheels, 4 axles (nails), and a set of decals.  In Pack 868, all work must be done at weekly den meetings.  Parents are able to provide assistance, but only at den meetings --- boys are not allowed to take their cars home.  This insures that the boys have the fun of building their own cars.

The actual race is run on a Saturday in late February.  We use a computer program to schedule heats so that every boy gets to race the exact same number of times and an equal number of times in each lane of our 4-lane track in order to equalize any bias between lanes.

While we award trophies for the fastest cars and "Best of Show," we try to emphasize the fun of building a car and the carpentry skills that are learned over winning.  At the end of our Pinewood Derby, we want our scouts going home having had a good time and not upset because the car their dad built got beat by a car some other boy's dad built.

Scott Metcalf from the Lowe's Home Center in Shepherdsville came to a weekly meeting to show a movie about how to build the cars and demonstrated use of a Dremel Tool for shaping and to polish the axles.

Webelos Leader Andy Rodabaugh and Tiger Leader Tom Gordon brought in their band saws to rough cut cars for the Scouts.   Bear Leader Will Rich checks with a Cub Scout to make sure the car is cut to the boy's satisfaction.

Tiger Cubs, like Max, needed and received a lot of help from their parents and den leaders.   Older scouts, like Webelos Adam, had built cars previously and knew what to do.
