BICYCLE
RODEO (Thursday, June 5, 2008)
The purpose of a
Bicycle Rodeo is to teach Cub Scouts about bicycle maintenance, bicycle
safety, and to help them earn their Bicycling Belt Loop. Pack 868
hosted our first Bicycle Rodeo as our first summertime event and invited
local Pack 848 to participate with us. The Shepherdsville Police
Department obtained some great handouts about bicycle safety for us from
the National Child Safety Council. We had a good turnout of both
scouts and parents from both units and the event was both fun and
educational for everyone.

| After a talk inside
about bicycle safety, Scouts and their siblings lined up to ride
a practice course. |
Bikes varied in
size, style, and color. We teased Caden about his
fluorescent green "stealth" bike. |
| Preston's "big
wheel" was a hit that several of the boys took turns riding
around the course. |
Dawson gives the
"big wheel" a spin as Caden is careful to avoid
running into him. |
| Of course, not all cyclists were always as
patient or careful as Caden. Here we see Tre giving Dawson a
nudge forward. |
The course included
an intersection with a stop sign -- complete with a traffic
cop. Riders had to stop and signal a right turn before
proceeding. |
| Just like in real
life, traffic often backed up at the stop sign as some riders
forgot to signal their turn. |
But our traffic cop
did a good job of keeping citizens smiling as he enforced the
rules of the road. |
| Parents did a good
job of keeping watch, though we wonder if Will's mom sees Dawson
bearing down on her from behind? |
Overall, the riders
did a good job of sharing the road and we didn't have even a
single collision. |

OK, Brian, we see
your signal ... but what we really want to know is how does a
big guy like you manage to ride a bike that small? |
