BICYCLE RODEO  (June 4, 2009)

A Bicycle Rodeo is simple to conduct and a lot of fun for the Cubs.  Ours began with a bicycle safety talk from Shepherdsville Police Office Jason Rives.  Scouts then boarded the bicycles to ride a course that had been marked out with traffic cones in the parking lot adjacent to the Community Center.  At certain places, the riders had to give hand signals before turning or stopping.  Emphasis was on safety and staying within the course; not on speed.

Officer Rives passed out a bicycle safety worksheet at the beginning of the program.  Parents and a few siblings also participated.

Officer Jason Rives and Captain Ken Bernardi quizzed scouts about things they saw in the picture on the worksheet that were unsafe.

Then the anxious riders lined up on their bikes for a turn on the test course.   The stop sign was an immediate bottleneck since all riders were required to stop and signal before turning the corner.

Both bikes and riders can in various sizes and with differing skills.   Mr. Rich played traffic cop as he monitored the scouts' hand signals, stops, and turns.

Scouts soon learned that they could get through the intersection more quickly if they didn't bunch up and crowd each other.

The mini-bike proved to be popular with all the boys, regardless of their age.
