BICYCLE RODEO (June 2, 2011)

Our annual Bicycle Rodeo is part fun and part serious.  The serious part is first.  The evening begins with a discussion about the "rules of the road" and bicycle safety.  Then the boys go outside to ride their bikes on a course that has been laid out using traffic cones.  But the course also includes turns and even a stop sign were the scouts must give the proper hand signals and then turn or stop, accordingly.  It's not a "race" ... it's a course to practice safe riding.  But the boys still have a good time and this is always a popular event.  It's also our first official "summertime pack activity."

Assistant Cubmaster Bob Meek in on his knees with parent Dana Heffley being silly during a presentation at the start of the meeting.   But the focus of the meeting was clearly on riding bicycles safely.

Webelos Leader Will Rich gets to play "traffic cop" at the stop sign. Jelani signals that he's about to make a left turn.
Things got a little backed up at the stop sign ... just like with cars! Webelos Leader Leo Heppler used a traffic cone as a megaphone to give directions to the riders.
Some of the younger guys were still a bit shakey, but the older guys were comfortable on wheels.   Despite temptation to get wild, most of the boys did a really good job of controlling themselves.
Some of the boys took it more seriously than others. Brayden is clearly having a good time.
Calvin seems to have gotten it. It was so much fun, even some bigger kids decided to take a spin around the course.
