SCOUT-O-RAMA (Saturday, March 28, 2009)

The Lincoln Heritage Council's annual Scout-O-Rama is the oldest Boy Scout exhibition in the United States, having been held for over 50 years.  For the past 20 or so years, the show has been held in the infield of the historic Churchill Downs horse racing track in Louisville.

Units from thoughout the Council are invited to come and set up displays and/or camp in the infield.  Most Cub Scout packs choose to set up booths under the cover to huge circus-style, big-top tents that feature games to play or other interesting things for Cubs to do.

For 2009, Pack 868's booth theme was "rubber band guns."  One of our Cub Scout fathers made a half-dozen wooden "shotguns" designed to fire rubber bands.  We used empty aluminum cans as targets.  The theme was simple enough that Pack 868 Cub Scouts could run the booth with just a tad bit of adult help.

Unfortunately, the date coincided with the first weekend of school spring break and the weather was cold and rainy; so both the number of participating units and public attendance were down significantly from most years.  Still, our boys enjoyed the day and earned a blue ribbon for their efforts.

Scouts attending Scout-O-Rama lined up to shoot the rubber band guns at Pack 868's booth.

Tiger Cub Kenneth stands back out of the line of fire while the participants are shooting.

The scouts immediately saw how to "load" the guns and rubber bands were soon flying down range!   These marksmen were kind enough to hold their fire while our photographer snapped a quick picture.

Wolf Cub Scouts Cody and Caden worked a shift together.  They waited for shooting to cease before picking up the rubber bands and placing them back onto the firing table.   Our scouts earned a blue ribbon for our booth.
