TENT CAMPING AT CAMP FRIEDLANDER
and
SPOOK-O-REE

(Friday~Sunday, October 21~23, 2011)

For our October outing, Pack 868 had planned a tent camping trip to another Dan Beard Council scout camp.  Luckily, that camp was closed, so we reserved a campsite in the Boy Scout camp section of Camp Friedlander.  Since SPOOK-O-REE was being held that Saturday night at Cub World, we made reservations and hiked over.  It was a good decision, because the Cubs all had a great time at SPOOK-O-REE.  The Dan Beard Council really put on a great show --- everything was very well done.  The activities included a haunted castle, hay rides, a haunted trail, a maze made of hay bales, and a midway that featured dozens of "spooky" games for the boys to play.

The rest of the weekend went equally well.  Due to the long drive, it was nearly midnight when we arrived at Camp Friedlander on Friday night.  But the troop's canvas wall tents fit perfectly over the steel tent frames in our campsite, so setting up the tents was easy and quick.  After everyone had secured sleeping space and secured their gear, we built a campfire, made hot cocoa, and snacked on sugar wafers.  It was nearly 2 AM before most of the boys headed off to bed.

Because of the late bedtime, we let everyone sleep past 8 AM on Saturday morning.  Then we fired up the propane grill and let each of the Cub Scouts cook their own pancakes (under close adult supervision).  They did a really good job and no one got burned.

A fallen tree in the woods near our campsite became an attractive playground for the boys and they climbed on it every chance they got!

Cub Scouts and Cub Scout dads lined up to help handle gear as it was unloaded for the troop's truck.

Assistant Cubmaster Bob Meek (on the truck) handed gear down to Mr. Reece and other dads.

Webelos Scout Zach and Wolf Cub James cooked their pancakes as other scouts waited in line.   Tiger Cub Holden didn't have any trouble flipping his pancake.

Webelos Scouts Evan and Caden (back to camera) cooked their pancakes as Andrew watched.    Bear Cub Scout Thomas waited for his pancake to cook before flipping it.

Webelos Scout Eric had to deal with a couple of pancakes than ran together.   Wolf Cub Scout Dennis watched his pancake as Mr. Greenwell ladled batter from the mixing pot.

Caden seemed to approve of his work.   A group of Cubs dined together.  We prayed before cooking so that everyone could eat hot pancakes.

This downed tree only a few feet behind our campsite was the boys' favorite play area.   Dennis, Calvin, Tony, and Kenneth.
