TRASHMASTERS CLASSIC LAKESHORE CLEANUP
(Friday~Sunday, September 18~20, 2009)

Pack 868 had such a good time camping and pickup up litter at this event last year that we decided to return for 2009.  Using tents borrowed from Troop 868, the Pack camped in E-Loop at the Bailey's Point public campground and had to spread out over at least 10 campsites in order to accommodate all our folks.

The weekend went extremely well.  As one might expect, our newest Tiger Cubs and their parents didn't really know what to expect, this being their first camping experience with the Pack and all; but our seasoned Cub Scouts and parents pitched right in to get everything set up as soon as they stepped off the bus.

Saturday morning was spent picking up litter from around the shoreline of Barren River Lake.  Cubs and parents got shuttled across the lake on pontoon boats to their assigned section of lakeshore.  Being a large group, we got divided into several crews.  Some sections of shoreline were more rugged than others ... and more littered!  In one case, the pontoon boat couldn't get all the way to the shore and the volunteer "trashmasters" had to wade in ankle-deep water to get from the boat to the land.  But that's all part of being a scout and everyone met the challenge with a positive attitude.

One Cub Scout in our group even managed to win one the grand prizes at the post-event beach party!

The Pack held a Saturday night campfire program and a Sunday morning worship service in our campsite.  Overnight rain on Saturday night and drizzle on Sunday meant we came home with wet canvas, but the weekend otherwise went well and the scouts all had a great time.

Not a bad looking campsite for a Cub Scout group!   A group of Tiger Cub parents standing in awe.

The scouts enjoyed playing in the sand at the Barren River Lake State Park beach after lunch.   Other boys found the water itself more inviting.

Back in camp, boys in the Bear Den enjoyed carving blocks of soap.   Den Leaders Will Rich and Alan Wetzel chatted with Tiger parent John Cottrell about Cub Scouting.

Tacos were a bit hit for Saturday night dinner.   S'mores after a campfire are always popular.

Webelos parent Mike Troxell volunteered to cook the sausage for Sunday morning breakfast.   Yes, Calvin, we really are going to show you how to cook scrambled eggs in a plastic freezer bag!
Scouts and leaders gathered under the dining flies for Sunday morning worship.

Tiger Leader Nick Harris and two Tiger parents ponder what they've gotten themselves into?   But campers still smiling on Sunday morning leaves no doubt that the outing was a huge success.
