TENT CAMPING AT TUNNEL MILL (May 15~17, 2009)
Page 2

On Sunday morning, while the 5 dads once again departed to complete their training, the Cubs cooked breakfast then packed up their own gear and helped break camp.  The group then hiked to the camp's chapel for a morning worship service before returning to the campsite to pack the troop truck and head for home.  As is our tradition, the last duty we performed before departure was to lower the colors.  We returned to Shepherdsville early afternoon with a group of happy campers and 5 more trained leaders!  All in all, a pretty good weekend.

Calvin tries to light some cedar bark.  Normally an excellent tinder, the overnight rain had left it pretty damp and it simply refused to burn!

Nevertheless, the entire group patiently watched and waited for their turn to try.  Unfortunately, no one was successful.

An afternoon hike of the perimeter trail led to a part of the trail that had been wiped out by a wind storm several weeks prior.  Getting back onto the trail required a bit of climbing.   Who are these filthy scouts?  The mountaineering crew from Pack 868, quite obviously!

Who says Cub Scouts can't set up canvas tents?

The campfire ring is always a good place to find scouts.  There's just something about boys and fire.   Den Chief Dylan led the troops to Sunday morning worship at the camp chapel.  No, he didn't need the axe to threaten them --- it was a prop for the church service.

Pack parent Leo Heppler led our Sunday morning  worship service.

Scott and Josh perform color guard duty as the flag is lowered as we prepared to leave our campsite.   Scouts and parents alike stand in formation and show proper respect as the colors are lowered.
