WEBELOS WINTER CABIN CAMPING  (Jan 15~17, 2010)

The Boy Scouts of Troop 868 always invite all the Webelos to go winter cabin camping with the Troop during the month of January.  This is a Troop outing versus a Pack outing, so the whole program is planned and run by the Boy Scouts; but caters very specifically to the Webelos' interests and advancement needs.  The outing gives the Webelos a chance to experience camping "Boy Scout style" and those who participated all had a GREAT time!  This year's event was held at the Rotary Scout Reservation near Glasgow, KY.  More photos from this event may be found on Troop 868's web site.  The direct hyperlink is www.bsatroop868.com/RSR2010.htm.

The cabin at Camp Rotary where the Webelos slept in an upstairs loft.  The cabin has a wood-burning stove and electricity.

The side porch of the cabin provided space for the boys to work on advancements, wash dishes, and eat several meals.

One of the troop's older scouts instructed the Webelos about the proper --- and safe --- way to chop wood in an axe yard area.   Cooking was done over wood fires in shepherd stoves located a safe distance from the cabin.

A layer of snow on top of the frozen lake showed the tracks of several different animals.  Camping with snow on the ground is always fun and reveals just how many critters are active while people sleep.   For the last meal prepared and eaten in camp, the menu called for english muffin pizzas.  In the interest of time, the group used the electric stove in the kitchen rather than building a box oven.
